Common problems and their solutions

The Xbox360 is a sophisticated games console that has many features and a variety of options, many of which you can change from the settings tab. Sometimes you may not be able to get to the settings tab or perhaps you have stumbled upon a problem which requires you to reset those options. Many people don't realise there is a simple way of resetting the options, here are some common problems and their solutions.

No display output to TV

This happens quite often when switching between various video cables, the problem is usually related to the display resolution or capabilities of the TV being used. If you are using a HD component cable (the one with Y/R/W and R/G/B plugs) then first check that the switch on the side of the Xbox360 connector, is set to TV or HD depending on your TV capabilities. Failing that you might need to reset the video options, you can do this by powering up the console and then holding the Right Trigger (RT) and the X button until the ring of light on the front of the console is fully lit. You should now hear the Xbox360 intro sound once again, confirming that the console has reset the video settings and you should now have the default video setting back.

Controller not synchronized

To use a wireless controller, you must first synchronize it with your Xbox360. If the controller is not paired with your console then the ring of light on the controller will constantly flash, because it cannot connect to whichever console was stored previously. This can easily be resolved by holding the synchronize button on the front of the console, until you see the ring of light circling round, in a clockwise fashion. You then need to do the same thing with the controller, the button is on the top of the controller so again hold it in until you see the ring of light circling round again. Be sure to do this while the ring of light on the console is still circling, otherwise the controller will not synchronize. You must perform this procedure every time you wish to connect a wireless controller to a console, that is not paired previously, so if you take your controller to a friends house you'll need to synchronize the controller to their console and then synchronize it again with your own console later when you get home.

Hard drive malfunctioning

If your hard drive is not working as it should, then perhaps it has accumulated dust or other foreign objects inside the connector. It may also be connected incorrectly, to test both of these theories, you should press the button on the top edge of the hard drive and then lift the hard drive out of the socket. Now blow towards the connector to remove any dust build up or other foreign objects, then slot the back edge into the back of the console (there is a ridge for the groove to sit against) and lower the other side into the connector. The hard drive should click into place and be secured firmly into the bay, with any luck the hard drive should function correctly now but if problems persist, you may want to test in another console to make sure your socket or Xbox360 isn't faulty. If you find your hard drive to be faulty then you should copy your gamer profile and saved games to an Xbox360 MU or USB memory stick and seek help from Microsoft, who may offer a replacement hard drive or discount on a replacement hard drive.

Lack of space of hard drive

If you have used all your space, but have counted the quota of your installed files and see some space missing, then you can try clearing the cache to reclaim some space used by games you do not own or play anymore. Go to the system tab and then memory, now highlight your storage device and tap in the following combination:

X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X

A window should pop-up saying "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?" and when you confirm this, all cache files and game updates will be cleared from your storage devices. This is useful if you need a small amount of extra space to store some saved games or download a smaller Xbox Live arcade game, though if you are running out of space then an additional storage device is recommended. Remember that the latest dashboard update enabled the use of USB flash memory sticks, so you can purchase practically any USB memory stick and store your saved games and content on there, without the need to upgrade your hard drive.

Cannot connect to Xbox Live

Most of the time when this happens, there is a problem with your internet setup or local exchange. Xbox Live does go down sometimes but it is always best to first check your local setup. Usually this is as simple as reseting your cable/adsl modem or wireless router, so unplug the power from all network devices and let them sit for about 30 seconds, then power them all back up at the same time. With any luck you will now be able to connect to Xbox Live once again, if you still cannot connect but have internet access on a laptop or desktop computer then you may need to check your router settings. Most modern routers have a setting called UPnP (universal plug and play) which allows any device connecting to them to configure themselves for optimal use, if you have this setting then make sure it is enabled so you don't run into any problems. If you're still having problems connecting and your router has a built-in firewall, try disabling it temporarily to see if that is getting in the way, if it is conflicting then you need to allow some ports to pass through. There is an article about this on xbox.com so click the link below if you need to do that.

Network ports used by Xbox LIVE

That's all for now, these are the most common problems I've come across. If you can think of any other problems then please leave a comment below and I will update this article! Thanks for reading and good luck!
